UW Health – Living Donor Recognition Wall

Since completing its first kidney transplant in 1966, the UW Health Transplant Center is one of the oldest, largest, and most respected organ donation and transplant programs in the country. UW Health’s goal with the new facility was to create a better experience for those involved in the organ transplantation process as well as honor donors for their life-saving decisions. Xibitz was fortunate to help bring this special recognition feature to life after being retained by the Experiential Design firm ZEBRADOG in Madison, Wisconsin.

The Living Donor Recognition Experience is a series of light boxes constructed of wood and acrylic, with donor names printed on glass discs throughout the wall. Each disc is covered with a Corian surround attached with magnets and is easy to remove for updating. On the back side of the wall is a digital media experience, also designed by ZEBRADOG, to showcase individual donor stories and a full listing of all donors to date. The bright, captivating wall is in a prominent location to attract visitors and inspire future organ donors, creating awareness around the gifts of life and healing while honoring life-saving heroes.

Akron Children’s Hospital

From humble beginnings as a day nursery in 1890, Akron Children’s Hospital has evolved into the largest pediatric healthcare system in northeast Ohio, operating two hospitals, 22 offices, and approximately 70 specialty locations across the region – together drawing more than 650,000 patient visits each year.

A $200 million expansion of its Akron campus incorporates a theme of “things familiar” – in particular what a child would find in his or her back yard. Features include a “Blue Wall” spanning an open two-story space. Symbolizing a backyard fence, it is also visible from outside the building and incorporates a series of mounted wood veneer panels. Custom animated interactive elements are activated by motion sensors in some niches supplemented by static backlit images in others. Abstract Tree Sculptures are another feature provided by Xibitz. They stretch from floor to ceiling and are textured to enhance their resemblance to trees. Xibitz also executed the production, engineering, and installation of a chandelier representing a canopy of leaves. It utilizes panels of colored glass suspended at different heights that (move) with air movement.

Beacon Children’s Hospital

Hospital Tower Atrium

The Atrium of the Beacon Children’s Hospital Tower takes on a nature theme giving patients a fun and colorful learning experience. Alongside design partner Peter Hyde Design, Xibitz created a unique and eye-catching space that extends comfort and inspiration to patients and visitors. Xibitz custom fabricated a 3-story tall tree sculpture and an additional balcony treehouse. Visitors can walk through the lower branches that make up the tree’s trunk. The space has multiple interactive learning exhibits that incorporate animal cutouts, flipbooks, and sound. Leaf cutouts adorn the skylight and colorful dragonflies hang from the ceiling – both catching the light and creating shimmering shadows throughout the space.

Seattle Children’s Hospital

Seattle, WA

Consistently ranked as one of the top children’s hospitals in the world, Seattle Children’s Hospital provides outpatient and inpatient treatment to children throughout the northwest United States. Their dedication to transforming children’s health comes at a cost, and could not be achieved without the generous donations from the community. When Seattle Children’s Hospital decided to create an engaging and distinctive donor wall in their Emergency Department they approached Xibitz.

The hospital’s donors believe that change is the result of stepwise progress, of attacking a series of challenges with a goal in mind and a mission in your heart. When we change the world for one child, we change the whole world, one donation at a time. It was this mindset that inspired a pebbled donor wall. Each pebble and stone, when combined, can create a path forward. Xibitz designed and manufactured hundreds of rocks to display donor names, as well as the undulating wall on which they are mounted. Integrated lighting illuminates the wall and mimics a flowing river. These elements create a sense of impact and they reinforce the collective sentiment of the village of donors and their passion for the community.

Helen Devos Children’s Hospital

A hospital’s work is serious business – and that can make it especially scary for a child. With this in mind, the Helen DeVos Children’s Hospital provides a warm and welcoming environment, with special amenities for families while offering high-quality care in a state-of-the-art facility.

Xibitz was selected to create branded displays for the children’s hospital to recognize the gifts of over 6,000 donors and provide nontraditional location signage. The intentional design and meticulous choices of materials allow for a layering effect that accentuates detail and flow while complementing the building’s overall architectural aesthetic. The result balances playfulness and elegance, using colors and shapes to connect patients, family members, and visitors with the facility in comforting ways. Sounds like good medicine.

Cincinnati Children’s Research Foundation

Tracing its roots to 1884, Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center has been dedicated to improving the health and well-being of children throughout the world. The Medical Center’s newest research tower, known as the “S Building,” features 415,000 square feet of modern basic and clinical research lab space, specifically designed to promote collaboration across disciplines and encourage interaction among basic, translational and clinical investigators.

To showcase the center’s legacy of innovation and latest breakthroughs, its leaders called on a collaborative effort between Kolar Design, Perspectives 360, and Xibitz. The team identified and executed the project’s goals through dynamic sculptures, rich colors, and several hundred feet of plasma monitors that help communicate the center’s vision, engage dialogue and celebrate discovery, while inspiring those who work to improve children’s lives now and for generations to come.

Baylor Scott & White Health

Healthcare Exhibition Fabrication by Xibitz.

The Star in Frisco, TX

The Sports Therapy and Research Center is a state-of-the-art, collaborative facility providing athletes with unparalleled health services that allow them to reach their peak performance. The Star is a first-of-its-kind, bustling sports and entertainment district that is home to the Dallas Cowboys World Headquarters and practice field. The district offers more than 35 restaurants, shops, and other specialty services including the Tostitos Championship Plaza and the Omni Hotel.

Perkins&Will collaborated with Xibitz to produce several iconic design elements including a 3-story vinyl “Running Man” graphic applied to architectural zinc panels. This graphic is seen as you enter the center and is an indicator of the important work happening for the athletes inside. Throughout several floors of the building, Xibitz installed custom wall panels produced from miter folded and painted aluminum. The formed, dimensional boxes display dynamic backlit photographs of athletes that are directly printed onto the aluminum. Many of the graphic panels integrated custom, touchscreen monitors, that communicate key facts and information for visitors and staff.

Sleek podiums display various artifacts as well as a bronze bust created by a local artist and sculptural “hands” of well-known, former Dallas Cowboys. A beautiful, sculptural art piece can be found hanging in the atrium. Rows of quadrilateral shapes are hung at different heights and angles to create an effect of randomness, yet once the viewer steps beneath the sculpture, the shapes come together to form the Baylor Scott & White logo. Xibitz secured each shape on aircraft cable from a structure above the ceiling to ensure engineer requirements were satisfied. The end result is nothing short of spectacular.
